Reflection :
In this particular assignment I learn how to develop critical thinking and apply a sociological practice in real life circumstances. Also for me was really interesting analyze learn different perspectives of society and analyze different cultures with a different perspective and see different values systems. The different theories that I learned during this semester I think they are very interesting and useful in life.
A challenge I had through the process of this paper would be what is the difference between the relativistic and normative definition of deviance, and how sociologist interpret the different conditions that exist when an act is consider deviant. This assignment was undoubtedly related with the material that I learn in the classroom and in my communication class where we also learned about different theories. The way I address them would be how can I deal with them in real life. This assignment helped me to illustrate, change and progress my point of view, because some of the theories I learned like: strain theory,labeling-theory, and differential association theory, help me to understand better how society functions and how I can put pieces together interpreting different situations in real life scenarios. Thank you

SHORT PAPER # 2
Two major changes that have occurred in my life are my divorce and going back to college. Life can change in a blink of an eye, from being a homemaker wife to a single parent with three kids and now a student. These new two roles had major alteration and impacted my ordinary routine.
1. One of the factors that led me to this new episode in my life was to challenge myself to change the course of my future and have a better life for my kids and myself.
a) After my divorce, I made the choice to go back to school. I realized education is definitely a tool of training that will allow me to see things in different perspective, acquire knowledge and be able to apply what I have learned in life and have an opportunity to get a better job and have financial stability.
b) This new role as a student has helped me realize, reflect, and find my path in life. At the same time gather some wisdom and set specific goals in a certain period of time.
2. Some of the processes that were applied in this new role are: the development of new rules at home with my children, for instance teaching them to be more independent and help more around the house, do most of their homework on their own, and keep a strict schedule Monday through Friday. On the other hand I had to suppress activities that I used to do when I was married like going out with my friends, I have cook at night for the next day, stay up until 3:00 am in the morning doing homework. I have to admit this new role on several occasions have cause struggles especially when I try to meet my own expectations as a mother, worker and student.
a) One of the methods of socialization that I have used through this process will be modeling, because in my adolescent years my parents always supported me and encouraged me to study. They gave me the opportunity they did not have themselves and they always emphasized the importance of being educated, how intellectual capacity was required for any field and why education was productive and beneficial. Unfortunately back then, I did not understand the meaning of how important it was to be educated and have a career. Therefore this was an important reason that factor influenced me to go back to school. While I was married I often thought of going back to school, but it seemed to me it was never the right time. (I guess I was not ready to make that commitment yet.)
b) As an agent of socialization I think mass media played an important role in my life, because when I got married, I was raised to think that a woman’s place was being in home as a house wife and take care of the kids, while men would support his family financially. Watching different shows, movies, programs, books, and magazines. I notice that women played different roles in life besides been a house wife. Then I realized that my tradition and culture most of the time are based in foundations of experiences that pass from generation through generation, and sometimes the way you think can change little by little our perspective of life by having the influence on mass media. As an example of mechanism of social control, after been married for eleven years and getting a divorce, my behavior, feelings and attitude changed. I felt lost, confused, guilty and facing what I considered a dramatic experience that would change my life forever. Nevertheless the new expectations as a student helped me to focus in something different that will uphold a new role in my life.
c) The process of adapting to this new role was to trust in myself, and realize that this new experience will help me to fulfill my life and to be ready to start a new episode.
3. This change in playing different roles not only affected me but my kids also, because the commitment I have as a mother is undoubtedly a role in my life that I feel proud of it and give me strength to overcome obstacles in order to provide a better future for my kids. However I don’t have the opportunity to spend time doing things with them like reading every night when they go to bed, go to the park often, cook twice a day their favorite meals, and all these factors have caused a role conflict because I am a worker, single mother and student.
Undoubtedly my self-image changed because now I have no regrets about the past, I am convinced that it has been one of the best decisions in my life. I feel bless and thankful for my family, my boss, friends and teachers that encourage me to keep on going in this journey “never give up and pursue my dreams” because education plays an important role to be successful.
